Learning through Action: The FREE Zion Project

With nearly 175 years behind it, Berea College knows well that a community’s history is its foundation. When the past is lost—when stories, people, and ways of life are forgotten—the future can feel impossible to imagine. Preserving that reservoir of tradition and memory is vital for a community, so that it may not only survive, but also thrive and prosper. For the past two years, a Berea initiative known as The FREE Zion Project has helped one small community in Meade County, Kentucky, to keep its legacy alive.

One Blood, Many Faiths

Berea College has always placed a priority on meeting its students’ needs as supportively and holistically as possible. From the time of its founding by the Rev. John Fee, the College has always known that students have deeper needs that go beyond education, opportunity, and work experience. Students also need spiritual care and support. See how our students are uplifting one another through spiritual support and community.

Preserving Appalachia, One Bow Tie at a Time

“Special Collections and Archives is here to remind Berea College what it’s about; to remind it of its roots and its founding vision and to keep us on track,” said Tim Binkley, Berea’s head of Special Collections and Archives (SCA). In a very real way, that’s exactly what SCA is—Berea’s institutional memory. And not just the College’s memory, but the collected remembrance of the entire town and surrounding Appalachian region.

A Pilgrimage of Love

At Berea College, we take pride in seeing every one of our students embark on their life’s journeys. But it’s always especially heartwarming when two Bereans decide to travel together.  On a study abroad trip last year, right before beginning their trek down an ancient pilgrimage road in Spain, Catherine ’26 and David ’26 also started another, even more exciting journey.
